Awareness of Methanol Poisoning

  • Submitted by: Alex Cole-Hamilton, Edinburgh Western, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 27 August 2025
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-18619

That the Parliament welcomes calls for greater awareness around the risk caused by methanol poisoning; highlights that western tourists are at potential risk of losing their lives to this condition; recognises that countries in Southeast Asia, such as Laos and Indonesia, have had reports of methanol poisoning, leading to death and life-changing injuries for tourists simply on holiday; understands that such poisoning is also occurring in Turkey, Ibiza and Zante, which are often popular tourist destinations for many young people from Scotland and the rest of the UK, and calls for the Scottish Government to provide education about the risks of methanol poisoning and ways in which it can be spotted and prevented to ensure that young people are equipped to combat the danger posed by it.
