To ask the Scottish Government what steps it is taking to ensure that children are better supported by the education maintenance allowance.
Answer
The First Minister announced that the education maintenance allowance (EMA) programme will be expanded to support more young people. These changes include raising the eligibility threshold and extending the scheme to part time college students and will come into effect from 1 January 2016. EMAs have already helped thousands of young people Scotland stay on in education to build up their skills and employability. It is estimated that an additional 22,000 young people will become eligible for EMA under the revised eligibility criteria.
