To ask the Scottish Executive what information it has regarding recent media reports that some local authorities are removing funding from private and community nurseries that helped to deliver the statutory 12.5 hours per week of free nursery provision.

Statistics from the Care Inspectorate, published on 31 October 2011, indicate that, as at December 2010, 76% of private nurseries and 89% of not-for-profit nurseries are providing pre-school education in partnership with local authorities. This represents a slight increase of 1% for both types of provision, compared with the previous year.

In addition, Scottish Government statistics on pre-school education provision, to be published in December, will provide information about how pre-school education is being delivered within different settings across Scotland.

Figures published in 2010 indicated that 97.1% of eligible children registered for pre-school, an increase from 95.7% in 2009. These annual statistics also show the percentage of pre-school centres that are locally managed and run in partnership with local authorities.

It is a matter for local authorities to configure provision of pre-school education on the basis of local needs. We are aware that some local authorities are reconfiguring partner provision in consultation with their partners.

To ask the Scottish Executive what plans it has to audit the use of private and community nurseries across local authority areas following recent media reports that some local authorities are removing funding from such nurseries that helped to deliver the statutory 12.5 hours per week of free nursery provision.

The Care Inspectorate and the Scottish Government produce publications annually which provide information about pre-school education and childcare provision across Scotland– as set out in the answer to question S4W-03810 on 15 November 2011.

There are no additional plans to centrally audit the use of private and community nurseries within local authority areas.

To ask the Scottish Executive when the updated UK influenza pandemic preparedness strategy will be published.

The UK Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Strategy 2011 will be published today.

This is a pan-UK Strategy, developed by and published in the names of the four UK administrations.

It takes on board lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 (“swine flu”) pandemic and responses to the consultation on the draft document.

Copies of the strategy and the summary of responses to the consultation on the document are available in the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (Bib. numbers 53363 and 53364).

To ask the Scottish Executive what recent discussions it has had with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde regarding adequate provision of insulin pumps.

Our Diabetes Action Plan, published last year, makes it clear that we expect all NHS boards to make sustained improvements in increasing access to insulin pump therapy in line with the latest clinical guidance.

We expect each NHS board, including NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, to have a strategy covering the full range of insulin use, including the availability and management of insulin pumps.

We intend to ask NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, what steps it will take to increase provision of insulin pump therapy at its Annual Review later this month.
