To ask the Scottish Government what its response is to the publication by The Ferret on 3 September 2018 of photographs and videos that reportedly show salmon at an aquaculture site in Loch Roag, Isle of Lewis that are infested with sea lice and display fin and tail damage.

Scottish Government received reports directly from a member of the public regarding welfare concerns at a fish farm in Loch Roag and responded as outlined in the answer to S5W-18863 on 1 October 2018.

To ask the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body whether it will encourage the sale of rose veal in the Garden Level Restaurant.

Currently our catering providers supply chain does not include rose veal, however we will ask them to consider the sale of rose veal in the future. We acknowledge that rose veal production is different from “white veal”. We further note that rose veal is a by-product of the dairy industry and animal welfare organisations support farmers in rearing bull calves for rose veal or beef. Any decision to sell rose veal in the future will only be on the basis that the appropriate accreditation, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, has been obtained.

To ask the Scottish Government how many sea lice trigger (a) 3 (notification) and (b) 8 (intervention) enforcement notices have been issued by the Fish Health Inspectorate in each year since 2016.

Since the introduction of reporting and intervention levels in 2017, one enforcement notice has been issued to an Aquaculture Production Business not having satisfactory measures in place for the prevention, control and reduction of parasites as required by the Aquaculture and Fisheries (Scotland) Act 2007.

To ask the Scottish Government what information it holds on the number of used vehicle tyres exported in each of the last five years.

The majority of waste tyre exports are carried out under ‘green list’ controls which do not require application to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) but do require paperwork to be sent in which provides details on the waste type, quantity, date of shipment, recipient country and facility etc. The data below is therefore based on what has been submitted to SEPA.

Approximate tonnages exported for the last 5 years from Scotland are as follows;

2014 - 1,696 Tonnes (212,000 car tyres)

2015 - 1,460 Tonnes (182,500 car tyres)

2016 - 2,236 Tonnes (279,500 car tyres)

2017 - 702 Tonnes (87,750 car tyres)

2018 - 780 Tonnes (97,500 car tyres)

The majority of the tyres captured in the data above have been sent to India. When SEPA becomes aware of shipment of tyres to countries such as India, the exporter is required to furnish SEPA with the details of the recipient recovery facility, including permit which allows for the acceptance of tyres and of the contracts which need to be in place as required by the Waste Shipment Regulations. Where possible SEPA will also try and make contact with the Environment Agencies of the recipient countries to ask them to verify the suitability of the receiving facilities.
