National Treatment Centres (NTCs) require an appropriate mix of new and experienced staff to operate safely and efficiently. Management information provided by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) shows that at 31 March 2023, 153 people were employed in NTC Highland. 50 are new entrants meaning they are undertaking their first role in NHS Scotland. Whilst these figures from NES are classed as management information at this stage, NES will continue to work with data providers to develop these as Official Statistics. The next step in this process will be to release these statistics within the NHS Scotland workforce publication as Experimental Statistics in December 2023. NTC workforce data will be reported every six months thereafter.

The following table outlines the current projected activity for National Treatment Centres during 2023-24 with reference to the position in the NHS Recovery Plan.

It is not possible to compare the current proposal with the previous costs at this time. The Full Business Case for NTC-Lanarkshire is still under development and project cost estimates will be revised to reflect the impact of inflation, net zero carbon targets, plot change and updated clinical brief to align with national treatment targets.

While initial modelling of projected workforce requirements was undertaken to inform earlier phases of our planning for the National Treatment Centre programme, detailed plans relating to the size and composition of the workforce for NTC Lothian will be developed by the Board and submitted to the Scottish Government as part of the wider planning and approval process for the site in operation.

The Full Business Cases (FBC) for NTCs in Ayrshire & Arran, Tayside, Lothian, Lanarkshire and Grampian remain under development. The proposed number of patients treated will be revised to align with national treatment targets once FBCs are finalised.

Of the 800 additional nurses, midwives and allied health professional recruited from overseas, as announced on 8 June 2023, 357 have started in their post with the remaining due to arrive in the coming weeks.
