To ask the Scottish Executive, further to the answer to question S3W-3800 by Nicola Sturgeon on 18 September 2007, what the difference is between intensive therapy unit services and critical care capability.
Answer
Intensive therapyunit services are a subset of critical care capability. The term “critical care”is generally used to describe all levels of clinical support required for seriouslyill patients and encompasses routine monitoring after major surgery, high dependencycare, and intensive care. Intensive care is normally delivered in intensive therapyunits. Where necessary, it includes ventilation of the patient; support and treatmentfor multiple organ failure, and extensive and constant monitoring of vital functions.

To ask the Scottish Executive, further to the answer to question S3W-3802 by Nicola Sturgeon on 18 September 2007, what the proposed catchment areas are for emergency medical admissions to (a) St John’s Hospital, (b) the Western General Hospital and (c) the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

I understand fromNHS Lothian that they are currently preparing a plan to change the catchment areas.The details are still being worked on and the board expect to implement the plan in February 2008.
